Two months ago a whistling noise developed fairly quickly and hasn't changed since. It seems to be a loud whistling noise however I suppose it could be a bearing of some sort. The noise does not change if I remove the serpentine belt nor does it seem to be a function of rpm's. It remains the same regardless if I am in gear or neutral and clutch in or out. As best I can diagnose I think that it coming from the back of the engine. I thought that it might have something to do w/ the EGR valve/system but cleaning that (and the valve was stuck) didn't make a difference. In fact while runing the enging w/ the valve removed made no difference as well. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a broken intake manifold gasket. Dont know what year yours is but its somewhat common on '98+ rodeos.

Sorry for omitting these details:

1998 3.2L 195K miles

Also and maybe related: Upon start up when the engine is cold, it sounds like your in the middle of a tornado...well perhaps not that extreme but a very very loud windy noise. Then after as much as a minute, the sound suddenly and instantly goes away never to be heard again until the engine totally cools.

That is most likely just the cooling fan. Its normal. When everything is cold and you first start it the fan clutch will be locked up. It soon releases and starts working. My mitusbishi worked the same way.

Yeah its an air leak. Shouldnt be a problem at all. Just as long as the engine stays cool.
