89 trooper help
Helping a friend he overheated his 4 cyl, has a new head, everything back as it was now it wont start, not getting spark, any ideas? I checked the coil it sparks one time upon ignition turn on, is this right? not getting anything through the distributor. i am lost here, i didnt do the disassembly so i cannot be sure of all the connections, thanks.
well it looks like the "mechanic" had jumped the coil from a different source, jumped it to the correct connection and now we get spark, still not running, but i think it was be out of fuel, low fuel light is on and tank sounds empty. will try again thursday.
make sure the timing marks match up! I had put together o motor once with timing marks 180 degrees off...looked right until you checked the valves that were supposed to be open.
I think Todd has a very good point. I have never been able to get the 4-cylinder motor timed right by following the book. That's right, if I believe everything written, my car would still be in the garage! There is no magic to making the internal combustion engine run at top performance, you just have to know what to look for. Something like checking the timing is easy enough to do and a thorough look with a second check should take less than an hour.
It is crucial that the crank and cam are aligned together correctly and the distributor is set so that the spark will go to the cylinder that is on the verge of the power stroke. If those 4-things are not in proper order, than your engine has no chance in starting.
My advice is to pull the engine through by hand after you are convinced that everything is properly aligned and be sure the valves are closed on the firing cylinder, Once you are sure that all is as it should be, button everything back together and give it a try. Let me know what happens next.
