i have a 99 rodeo and it only has 1st gear and reverse. i checked the fluid today and it was full but it was a dark color and smelled burnt. could this be something simple or is it shot? thanks

You could try doing a partial fluid change by dropping the pans, replacing/cleaning the filter, and refilling. That will replace about half the fluid. If that works do it again in about a 6 months to a year to get more clean fluid in there. DO NOT get a flush done. It will loosen too much stuff at once and will usually clog the tiny passages. You can also try cleaning the range mode switch that usually takes care of alot of problems.
