will an 89 tranny work in an 87?

I'm having trouble with my 1987 4WD 4cyl automatic and I think I need a
new one. I found one fairly inexpensive, though it's a 1989 4WD 2.6L 4cyl
automatic tranny. Thing is, I don't know if my car is was produced after June
with the 2.6L or before June with a 2.3L engine. Does this matter when
replacing the transmission and if so, how do I find that info in my car?
