Default 1988 Trooper with engine losing power

Hey guys,

I joined your forum wondering if you could give me some advice since I'm a little unsure of what to do.

I've had this trooper since it was new. It's been a great rig and I love it. It's been giving me a weird problem recently though. The engine runs REALLY rough and loses power, sometimes it just cuts out and dies completely when in low RPMs or idling. Otherwise, it runs fine once I'm moving, and has occasional hiccups here & there but I can get around with it fine.

Replaced fuel filter. Ran 3 bottles of injector cleaner through it. STill have the problem.

One more interesting fact. I bought one of those HHO kits to help me get better mileage but I never ended up using it. I wired the little circuit board into the MAF sensor so I could reduce the mixture by hand but it was too much hassle to invest in a EGT guage and then run the whole hydrogen deal.. just never did it. So when I went to get the car smogged a few months ago, they made me remove the modified circuit board from the MAF sensor and put it back to normal.

Soon after that, the trooper started giving me problems. I wonder if somehow I fried my maf sensor? I soldered the wires back together and maybe it just got too hot or something? I dunno...

So what do you think? Is this an issue that could be the MAF sensor? If so, how do I replace the MAF sensor? It seems kinda hard. It was one thing to just clip the wire and attach it to something and then attach it back but I'm not sure how to remove the thing and put another one on... or is there a way to test and see if it's working correctly?

Thanks for any advice! I appreciate it!

ok, update... I figured out how to get the MAF sensor on & off, that was easy, I was confusing it w/ my other car when I initially wrote this post.

I checked the ECM and there are no error codes. I put the MAF sensor back on and it made no difference. Is there a way to test if it is working properly or not?
