Lady in need of help with 4wd
#1
I need someones help really bad. Back in March of this year I bought an 2004 Isuzu Rodeo. And of course stupid me did not try out the 4wd, and guess what it don't work Suprise Suprise! :The question is, I took it back to the place I bought it, and they told me they would fix it. They told me all that was wrong was it needed a new switch. Well I just received the switch in the mail and put it in, and of course it still does not work. Am I even trying to put it in 4wd correctly? Sorry I know it sounds stupid but if I am can anyone tell me what else could possiblybe wrong.

Need more info.
What switch did you replace? The 4X4 switch in the cab? Does it still have the stock hubs?
It
seems like the most common cause of 4X4 engagement failure on
Shift-On-The-Fly Rodeos/Passports is due to failure of an actuator valve on the front axle that actually locks the diff to the half shafts. Particularly if it is rarely or
never shifted into 4X4. Could be as simple as loss of connections to
that valve, or it could be defective. Or it could be the transfer case controller. Or it could be something else
completely.
Do you get any codes, or does the 4X4 switch light blink when you actuate it?
As Mr. Spock said, NEED MORE DATA, CAPTAIN!

You have to disconnect & energize the actuator motor & see if it responds.
But there are many other possible causes.
Go here & download the 02 manual & follow the SOTF troubleshooting procedure. It's complex, but it works. At least it did for me. My problem was the actuator motor on the axle.

Here's MY understanding of how the system works. Maybe this will give you some ideas as to where the problem(s) might be! Be warned, I am not a professional tech; just a home-brew, shade-tree mechanic just trying to get by with older machinery at a modest cost!
