Check Engine Light, Tank only fills 3/4
#1
We have a 2003 Rodeo. The check engine light came on almost a year ago. We had the codes read and it was a fuel one. Napa said it was probably from loose gas cap or filling the tank with the engine running. He suggested we "drive it off". We did. But then the light came back on. We had thecodes read again and this time there we like 4 fuel ones. We took it to the dealer and they replaced the wiring harness. Which we were having some stalling issues as well and this fixed it. However, they didn't fix everything. The check engine light was back on within a weekend, by this time the warranty was gone by a few miles andit beingright at the end of the month. The problemsremaining areit onlyaccepts 3/4 tank of gas. When you fill it, it clicks off at 3/4 tank, unsure if it was the gage, we experimented once. The nozzle would click off at 3/4 but it sounds full- you can hear the gas, give it a few seconds while you hear it drain in some and then you could put a little more in very slowly, repeat. Itdid fill after a LONG time of this.It smells gassy outside when you start it (is this just the way SUVs are?). And the check engine light is on. The inspection runs out this month. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Probaby your sending unit for your fuel gauge is failing. Its common for rodeos but havent really heard about it happening with newer ones.
Most likely the reason for the fuel codes is that your evaporative system canister is saturated from over filling. When the hose clicks off, stop. If you go beyond that you can over flow into the canister and saturate it. This will cause all kinds of fuel related codes, and will requier replacing the canister.

Thanks for the prompt reply. We have only filled it one time since the problem started (just a couple weeks ago)to see if it was really full or not andwe haven't gotten the codes since doing this. Do you still think that could be the canister? I would like to take it to the parts store tomorrow and ask them to check the codes again. Then I can come back and post them, hoping that will help. Thanks again.

your proably over filling it.if your gas guage only goes 3/4 the fuel level sensor or sending unit is bad.thats why your check engine light comes on getthe codes read again a good code reader will say fuel level sensor voltage high,an it may say low i cant remember exactly what number it is,but its in that nature,as you look through this site your find that there are many complaints about gas gauge problems on rodeos an it always the sending unit.the dealer sell a kit for 50.00 dollars you dont have to by the whole 300.00 dollar pump
