Question 91 TF Rodeo whirring sound front driver's side - tied to speed

G'day everyone,
I've got a 91 TF Rodeo with a stock 4ze1 engine with over 500,000 kms on it. Just this morning, this "whirring" sound started about halfway through my commute, seemingly coming from the front driver's side of the car. The sound "winds up/down" with the speed of the car (doesn't seem tied to engine RPM as I popped the bonnet and manually actuated the throttle and didn't hear the noise). I reckon I was going around 60 km/h when the sound started, and it seemed to only happen sometimes around that speed. It sometimes seemed to continue "whirring" up into the 70s and up to 80 km/h (that was the top speed I hit on this commute), and would then "wind-down" as I slowed, disappearing somewhere below ~60 km/h. The sound didn't seem to correlate with any noticeable change in how the car drove or felt. The sound happened in both 4th and 5th gear. I'm gonna have a look at the brakes and wheel bearing later on tonight after work, but was wondering if anyone else has had a similar thing or has any ideas? I'm not super clued in when it comes to mechanics so thought I'd try my luck here.
Cheers!
