1989 Trooper II
Hello everyone my name is Jack Ward and I have a beautiful and amazing girlfriend named Skyler Grove. Skyler for some odd reason always loved troopers, me being a "Car" guy I laughed at her. I usually stick to small nimble coupes, but don't get me wrong my first car was a 1993 Cherokee that I would take off road. Well when she stared to show a lot more interest in these things I figured I'd better look them up and I fell in love with them as much as she had. Well about 24 hours ago she purchased a 1989 trooper II with the 2.6 4ZE1 motor with a 5 speed transmission and 4wd. We picked this thing up for $740 and the guy also threw in a radiator, an oil filter, a fan, lower radiator hose, an altenator and 2 cylinder heads, one is a 4ZE1 cylinder head and the other is a 4ZD1 cylinder head. It has 178k miles on it and runs very well. Only problem is how this thing was in the north west for a while and has some frame rust... Well I don't consider that a big deal, I weld a lot so the first thing we are going to do fix the frame and coat the entire underbody in roll on bed liner to always protect it. I'm sure there are other problems we will find but we can address those as we find them. I do however have a lot of questions and I hope that this is the place to go to for answers. My questions are as follows:
Does anyone have any information on hybrid 4ZE1/4ZD1 motors?
Why does her trooper groan and squeek only when backing up?
Are their any common problems that we should be aware of that plague this generation of trooper?
Where is the best place to go for parts for this generation of trooper?
Thanks in advance everyone I look forward to talking to everyone and from what I can tell I'll have a shoe or bikini add in this thread in no time lol.

Valve job on your head or a head swap with a fresh one from an automotive machine shop if they have one in stock. Mechanically inclined? Then pull it yourself with the consultation of a proper shop manual. Don't know which end of a screw driver to use? It's gonna cost a bit in labor charges. Estimator link below may help.

The first generation Trooper was available as a 2 or 4 door, with a solid 4.555:1 rear axle and an independent front suspension. Early engines included 1.8 L 2.0 L and a 2.2 L diesel, lightly powered even by early 1980s standards for the vehicle's 3,700 lb (1,678.3 kg) empty weight. The four-wheel drive system was engaged by operating a three-position shifter adjacent to the transmission shifter.
