Default Wierd Starting Problem

It's a 97 3.2L. Took it on a road trip this weekend and it finally died about 60 miles away from my house. There have been a series of electrical gremlins leading up to this.

Over the past few weeks, several indicator lights have been coming on, including parking brake light, 4WD light. It got worse right before it died: ABS light, parking brake, 4WD light all came on. Tach and speedo stopped working. Also, stereo kept switching off and re-setting itself. Clock also went out. Noticed a loss of power when going up grades and what seemed like bucking or backfiring. Seemed OK on the flat and downgrades.

After it died, interior lights and stereo still seem to work, but it only makes a single click when trying to start it. It kind of sounds like an alternator but how would that cause certain dash lights to come on? Also, I checked the battery and it had 12 volts. Is it possible for a battery to lose amps but still show 12 volts?
