Default Temp sensor(s). 02 trooper 3.5 engine

I get a CEL once in a while. It has turned itself off after a couple of days a couple of times.
it tests in scans as either a temp sensor or thermostat. I’m hoping it’s the sensor because the one I can see is easy to get to.

Question 1.
is there only one sensor or is there another one hidden someplace?

Question 2.
Since the car doesn’t take an unusually long time to warm up and the temp gauge reads right in the center. (Not hot) is it a pretty good bet that the trouble is the sensor and not the thermostat?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have the FSM handy right now, but IIRC there are 2 coolant temp sensors. One for the ECM and one for the dash gauge.
If the dash gauge is reading normal and the engine is not exhibiting any overheating issues, it's probably not that sensor nor the t-stat.

That makes sense.
any Idea where the other sensor might be?
