Default intermittent transmission warning light

I have a 1995 trooper, the transmission warning light comes on intermittently, transmission works great when light is off, lose power when light comes on.

Any idea how I can fix this?

Start by checking the ECM for error codes. It's OBD-I so you have to count the flashes of the CEL. Basic procedure is -

Look up above the accelerator pedal and/or *gently* pull down any wires that will come down from that area. There will be three connectors, The green one is for the transmission, The c207 white single one is not the one you want.
The c205 aldl (assembly line diagnostic link) is the one you want.

jump connector with key all off; turn key to on (do NOT start!), read flashes. like this: quick flash (1) pause... quick flash...quick flash (2) this equals 1....2 = 12. this will repeat three times (and you will get 12 if your computer diagnostic system is working ok.) then you'll get other numbers in a similar manner which you can post here or look up on the internet

this is up above the gas pedal area. reach up. pull gently the wire down. you want the three-slotted white one
