Hi I`m new here and lookign for information needed to troubleshoot a fuel delivery problem with my 91 trooper.


The car ran fine. It was parked for a few minutes and upon return it failed to fire up and run. It would crank over but not fire up.


I checked the ignition system to find the spark is hot between distributor and coil.


Sprayed starting fluid into air intake hose and reclosed it. Then it appempted to fire up indicating a fuel delivery problem. When I loosened the plug t the bottom of the tank I found thre to be fuel in the tank.


So it appears that I havegas but it is not being delivered to the engine. Is there any other test I can do to further isolate the source or can I assume that I have a fuel pump malfunction? If that is the case is the pump located in the gas tank?


I am stranded in Portland from Alaska and would like to be able to domy own repair as the expense of shop work is not within my budget right now. Any help or info will be most appreciated. Thanks. Bob

What is your mileage? I know the fuel pumps on the '88s and '89s failed like clockwork at almost eactly 125,000.

I have done more checking since the original post to discover the filter is not the problem. By disconnecting the fuel line coming into the filter from the pump it was discovered that no fuel is getting to the filter from the pump. The fuse for the pump is good and the pump relay is good.


So I have at this point to assume the pump has failed.


Anyone here that can give me a general step by step the change the pump? Thanks. Bob

Update I changed the pump and the car still will not fire up. It tends to lag when crnking then crank over fast. Seems like a matter of jumping time. Can anyone give me a good way to test for jumped time? Thanks. Bob

i had recently had a fuel pump problem in my 89 2.6 trooper. i know you check the fuse. i did as well. but there are a couple fuses in the box under the hood. double check that your checking all of them. if there not popped. then get a test light and see if you have power going to the fuses.

there are more than one fuse for the fuel pump. in the same box. make sure those are still good. if they are then get a test light and see if you have power going to the fuses.

there are more than one fuse in the fuses box for the fuel pump. check them to see if there popped. if there not then grab a test light and see if you have power going to the fuse. i had the same problem in my 89 2.6. thats how i found thoses other fuses.
