yes if the egr is stuck open it will cause this concern also intake gaskets crack on the after a certian amount of miles, try tapping on the valve with somthing firm enough while it running if it smoothes uo the idle that it,or just take it off an look at it there only 2 screws holding it youll see if its stuck open.if it doest push the plunger all the way in an see if it hanges up.if it does not return to the closed position its sticking

I have a 2001 trooper-It was spitting and sputtering when I started it up cold, but ran fine after it warmed up.The check engine light came on and I took it to a shop and they told me that the egr valve was bad-so I bought a brand new one off the internet for 82 dollars and put it on and that didn't fix it.I came across a service bulletin on the internet somewhere and it told me to buy a spray can of carb cleaner and take the egr valve off and plug the exhaust port(The bigger hole) and crank the engine up and spray the entire contents of the can in the intake port(The smaller hole).May take 2 people to do this. After I did this,The engine came alive-started up smooth, more power and the check engine light went out.The can of carb cleaner cost me $1.69 plus tax.it's worth the try.
