the old box style troopers were bullet proof when they were taken care of,esp if it is a manual with the 2.6 liter engine.isuzu built a very tough truck those yrs,is it fuel injected?if so even better,if not the carbs engine was also good,but the throttle shafts in the carb wore out an would cause slight vaccum leaks around the base.an gave a rough idle.these were the 2.3l i cant say anything bad about them.....keep the valves adjusted,an dont overheat it,an they last forever.overheating them will crack the head,not keeping the valves adj will burn exhaust valves.other than that if its not rusted out it would be a good deal..go for it.i,ve seen those engine with 400k when taken care of they are very tough vehicles.

</>The 88's sold in the US were all fuel injected, but in many other locations they were diesel or 2.3L, etc. If it is a 4-cylinder engine it itcouldbea 2.6L, designated by Isuzu as the 4ZE1 (look for that marking somewhere on the body). The only major issue with that engine was solved by a re-design of the cylinder head. 88s did not get the new head in production but many were changed out after exhaust valves kept burning out...on the back end of the head isfoundry impression, a "1" or "2" is bad, a "4" or "5" or "amc" is good. You need a flashlight and mirror to see this marking on an installed engine.
If you find out any other facts...we may be able to give you some more specifics - mileage?, running condition?, engine type? # of doors?, etc.
Good luck </>

I have a 88 Trooper (2.6L 4cyl) for years and the only upgrade I made was 31" mud tires . It pretty much goes anywhere. They are built tough! Its a great choice for off-roading.< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-44";
