Default 96 Trooper w/ dead tranny. Hope?

Hi. There is a 96 that is virtually being given away. Body good. Miles about 190k. From my research, these Troopers are lemons because of their "fragile" trannys. Question: was a GOOD tranny ever made to replace the bad ones? Can this veh be gotten back on the road with a non-**** tranny, or is it a lost cause? Thanks. Chris.

Rebuilding the 4L30E tranny is actually pretty straight forward, and does not require any really special tools. I bought my 93 trooper about 4 years ago, with a blown tranny, and rebuilt it myself. Took about two weeks, a $200 rebuild kit, and the $20 4L30E rebuild manual. I should say, that I paid a bit more, because I had to order a new oil pump, due to physical damage to it(not normally necessary).

Trooper still for sale. Seller asking $500, but wants me to make an offer. Driver's door panel is off, as is at least one other iirc. Roof leaks at passenger side, with wet carpet sitting for years. My goal would be to get it functional, cut off the roof and have a sand vehicle. I live in Florence, Oregon. Would make full roll cage and roof would be re-attachable for rainy weather. I have a plan to raise the Trooper up 6' to make the tranny fix easier.
Owner says it runs, but won't leave first gear. This would mean automatic tranny, right?
He said he bought it with dead tranny, paid mechanic to fix (install rebuilt tranny), but then replacement tranny failed. Not sure why it didn't go back to the mechanic.
If I paid $200, then $250 for tranny rebuild kit. Would I end up with something okay for the money, or am I dreaming?
