Hi all,

I'm new here in this forum and have a question to ask.

I've got a Trooper '88, 2.8td, diesel engine 4JB1T, 5 speed manual transmission, manual front hubs, 310000km.

Lately I've experienced problems to shift gear from 4H back to 2H. It takes sometimes 500-1000m of driving after having shifted to 2H until the transfer case finally separates with a terrible noise and a bump that you can feel in your back. I guess I should not do that too many times otherwise something might break inside the gear box. I did already change the transfer case fluid (5W30). Shift lever can be engaged as usual so I’m never entirely sure what transmission mode I have selected. Of course if I make a turn I realize whether it 4H or 2H is engaged. The5 speed transmissionitself works properly.

I don’t want to think of the worst already (worn shift fork/sleeve/gear/hub) and wonder whether someone heredoes havea clue what I could try.

Regards

MfA

< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" =text/> </>Hi, and welcome to this forum!

I don't have your model, but since it is a manual shifting transfer, it is very peculiar that you are able to disengage it and have it still be in 4WD. It sounds like you drive with the hubs locked all the time as well, which can lead to more wear and tear on the front CV joints and diff. Regardless, have you tried just stopping, shifting into neutral, and disengaging?Reversing a bit? Look at the shift linkage to see if it is sloppy and not moving it's full throw due to wear ? It is not a shift on the fly transfer so in a neutral (no load) position the case should shift fairly easily. I hope someone else can offer a more informed opinion.

Good luck, hope this helps. One guys opinion. < =text/> _uacct = "UA-939292-44"; urchinTracker(); </>

</>What happens when you do the backward roll for 2m after the shift from 4H to 2H ? Do you hear the clicks? Is there any change in the feel of the shift level when you are rolling backwards? Edited by: glennb

Hi atfdmike,

thanks a lot for the hint. It works by stopping and shifting the transfer gear.

However, previously it worked also during driving. I just had had to step down from the accelerator pedal and then I felt the shift action from 4WD to 2WD in the shift lever and 4WD was always securely disengaged.

I normally do not have the hubs locked all the time but here in Austria thereare Winter conditions at the momentwith slippery road conditions so I do need 4WD very often.

Many thanks & regards

Mike

Hi Glennb,

thanks that works as well. But I still wonder what has changed compared to the past when was able to shift from 4wd to 2wd during driving without any problem.
