The vechicel is in great shape, except the engine knock. The previous owner said the engine throttle cable stuck open one morning and reved up very high! Thus is when the knock started (Passenger side) hes parked ever since then, it starts and runs! just knocks loud! Sounds like it''s right under the valve cover but when I removed it, nothing, I removed the exhaust cam and the shim and tapped assembly, nothing! I can even push the valves down, they don''t seem to stick at all. I fear removing the head. Any suggestions? It''s really a nice looking four wheel drive.

Help

I did something very close to the same as that owner did. I would go have the timming belt replaced and I would bet it will run great. Good luck.

Quite often a knocking sound comes from the idler pulley on the serpentine belt. They wear out and need to be replaced. It''s an easy check and an easy fix.

Another source of noise is the valve lifters. Dirty oil leaves particulates and crud in small passageways, causing oil starvation in the lifters. The factory approved fix is to use high quality synthetic (Amsoil or Mobil1) 0w30 for a couple oil changes. Always change the filter, too.

Other than those 2, you may have some actual damage.

It sounds more like a rod knock that any type of tensioner or lifter tick. How long has this been making this noise? If it just started and the engine hasn''t been driven too much it is possible that the rod bolts have come loose and the bearings just need to be replaced. If the journal on the crank is out of round and the rod is blueish plan on a rebuild or a good used. I just recently rebuilt a 3.5 in a 99 and parts and accessories and machine work are pushing $6000. So if you plan on rebuilding this engine do not throw anything away, i mean ANYTHING until you are have the engine in the truck and it is running.
