Hello everybody:
New to this forum, just traded in my 86 w/4ZD1 engine on a 1991 w/2.8L V6. I consider myself lucky to find this 1991 in Michigan, which just traveled from Oregon and the body is clean. It has over 200k and the engine has a couple of weak cylinders (75psi). I was wondering if any GM 2.8L throttle body engine would work for a replacement. The Trooper has the 5 speed manual trans.

Love these Troopers.

Don

well i would look into the 3.4 out of several GM''s camaro''s etc..... they''re both 60 degree V''s and your tranny will bolt straight up to the 3.4 you just need the ECM for it... and you''ll get ALOT more power as those 2.8''s are turds....

there are several people i know of that have done the swap and it''s pretty straight forward if you don''t mind doing a little bit of wiring for the ECM...... otherwise yea... it''s a GM 2.8.... find another and it''ll be plug n'' play.....

Hi: Thanks for the reply, thought it was a generic GM motor, the current 2.8L seems to have about the same power as the 2.3L in the 86. I will probably go with a 2.8L for now, I kinda like life in the slow lane (uknow, timing hill acceleration and down shifting), reminds me of the vehicles of my youth (Morris Minor 1000, BMW 600, Vaxhall).

Thanks again, really like this forum, lots of helpful information.

You could always opt for the 3.5L that came inlater Troopers, if you can find one. My 2001 has the 3.5 and has plenty of power, although I am also thinking of putting in aninline 6 if I can find one that will marry the tranny. If not I guess I''ll be getting a new tranny too if I want aninline 6. Theinline 6gives you more power, torque anyways, than a V6. If you''re offroading torque matters a lot. But, if your happy with tthe smaller V6, then stick to it. Go with what you''re happy with. But if you do decide to go for more power later on, then consider the 3.5L V6, or an inline 6 if you can fit it.

Hello Trooper87: Thanks for your suggestions, I agree an inline 6 would be more torque. I''m not planning much off road, my main concern is the Michigan winters and making it up my drive. My ex wife had a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L inline 6 and it had plenty of torque, but it took up the entire length of the engine compartment and was a real bear to change the water pump. Don''t know how the Trooper engine compartment compares to the Jeep. Thanks again for your input, always appreaciated. Don

well the main problem would be that the 3.5L WILL NOT bolt up to the MUA style 5 speed tranny..... HOWEVER it will bolt up to ANY 60 degree V-6 produced by GM.... so and trust me there has be ALOT of talk about doing this.... if you really wanted a power monster you could get you a grand national setup and roast tires for blocks..... and the MUA style 5 speed will bolt up and belive it or not those are some STOUT tranny''s mine has 214k on it and i wail on that thing on a regular basis....

as far as that 2.8 goes my Isuzu made 2.6 SOHC make''s about 5 hp and 10-15 lb. ft. of torque less..... kinda funny really.... but as long as you take care of em'' the 2.8''s are easy to work on and will last a long time...

DOHHHH!!!!! I keep forgetting that the tranny was changed too, the earlier Troopers share little in common mechanically with the later models like mine, lol. I keep forgetting that.

BTW, I''ve been wondering for a while, why in the world did Isuzu stop making the Trooper. Everyone I talk to that has ever had one says that it is the best multi purpose, being on and off road, SUV they''ve ever had. I know I love mine. Just curious.
