I have an 1998 rodeo 3.2 v6 in need of a water pump. I had it replaced when I had the timing belt done (less then a year ago). I''m going to do it myself, I have replaced water pumps before but not on an Isuzu. 1-do I need to pull the crank pulley? If so then how do you stop the engine from turning over? 2-Do I need to remove timing belt, I realize the pump is behind belt, but would there be enough room to remove without taking belt off?? I''m worried about the timing moving if I remove the belt.

Is there any other nasty little surprises I should be aware?

thanks

I''ve never done one so dont know specifics. You will need to at least loosen the belt if not remove it because the timing belt drives the water pump.

The crank pulley will need to be removed to remove the timing belt cover. The best way to get the bolt loose is to use a long breaker bar that will reach from the bolt to the frame on the drivers side. Disable the ignition so the engine wont start (disconnect wiring plugs near power steering reservoir that power the coil packs). Put the breaker bar in place with the end resting on top of the frame. Turn the ignition key to bump the starter. You will be able to turn the crank with a ratchet to get the timing set right without getting the bolt too tight to loosen again.

Okay, thanks for the tips. What about putting the crank pulley back on? How do I torque the bolt for the pulley without the engine turning over? Also is there a way to lock the cams in place so that when I remove the belt it will stay timed??

thanks for the replies
