I''ve purchased a 2000 Rodeo from a used car dealer with 116,000 miles on it.

Don''t have any of the service records!

Is there any way to detrmine from a visual inspection, whether the timing belt has been replaced?

I read from the manual that it should be done every 100,000 miles.

Thanks!

Steve C

usually difficult to tell by looking. Usually the timing belt tensioner goes bad (sounds like a rod knocking) or the water pump goes bad before the belt does on these engines. The good new is that its a non-interference engine so if the belt does break the pistons wont hit the valves.

Gizmo42 you said the engine is a "non-interference engine". The Manuals I have referenced say it is an interference engine and if the timing belt broke while running you should check for damage. Where did you see that it was a Non-interference engine?

Thanks, - My son is afraid he damaged his engine by starting it with the camshafts out of time. I don''t think it would start is the cams were out of time to cause damage! Comments?

Thanks again,

Rich

Its non interferance fit. The manuals are wrong. Isuzu even changed the interval for replacement from 60k to 100 because of that. The info came from Jerry (jlemond) who was an isuzu mechanic instructor for 20+ years.

Thanks, Gizmo42. That''s very helpful. Now I now we need to focus on an eletronic issue with the timing.
