How can improve audio from standard rodeo 97 V6 3.2L, without installation of sub woofer or amplifier?
I replaced factory speakers with new better quality front and rear (4X6) speakers but this hardly helped.
Can i replace rear 4X6 speakers with 6X9 in original housing? Is there replacement housing? I don't want to loose my cargo space

Any suggestions welcome

The 2nd gen rodeos have even worse rear speakers, 2 4" mounted above the hatch glass. I disconnected mine and wired in some 6x9s in cheap walmart boxes. Together with an aftermarket stereo (JVC 45 w/channel) it sounds pretty good. I still need to replace my front ones, they are blown.

I was able to improve the overall sound quality of mine without replacing any speakers... invest in a decent head unit with a built in amplifier. I opted for the Sony Xplode which only ran me about $110. There are a few models of the Xplode, but one with 4 x 50wats should easily do the trick and improve overall quality.


Side note... I have the one with the input jack for MP3, but I use it as a direct lead in for Sirius. Sounds awesome!

I have a base S model and it only came with two 4 in. speakers in the front dash. I was considering doing the same thing with some boxes and 6x9s for improved bass response and overall volume cause i can barely hear sh*t from the stereo with the window down.< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-44";

Well,

I installed a new head unit and replaced rear speakers for better quality, but same size.
I did not want to give up my storage room.
It sounds so much better. But barely any base ofcoarse. But sound is crisp-clear!!.
I might think about installing a compact subwoofer with build in amplifier. Some even fit under your chair and are about $200.

Does anyone have experience with those?

what you can do is run speaker wire from your aftermarket wire harness and run the wire under your carpeting and under the trims boards to the back and have speakers back there. I just recently took out my subwoofers and amps and they were just to much weight so i had to take them out

 

I installed the sub that mprost suggested (THANKS!) It fits underneath the front seat perfectly. Easy installation and perfect sound. Not window-rocking base, but it just add the depth that you need for good quality and now i can listen to music with windows open. Its great.
The sub underneath the seat is awsome because you FEEL the base. I love it. It is perfect now, with after marked radio
