I use my 2001 Rodeo V6 4X4 to tow a 18 foot travel trailer. When I get up on the highway the rodeo struggles to keep up with traffic. Would one of the performance chips work for this? Jetchip.com makes a chip for the Rodeo. It requires the ECU to be sent to them for reprogramming. Anyone have any experience with this? Where is the ECU located?

hi there. I don`t know about your car, but In my 97 it`s located underneath the radio,right in the center of the console..

On ''00+ rodeos its in the engine compartment between the air back and brake booster. At least on automatics it is, not sure on 5 speeds.

Dont know anyone thats had a jetchip done so cant comment on it.

 

We have the same Rodeo it sounds like, ours is a five speed so seemed to work OK pulling our company utility trailer. When empty the weights would be close. When loaded, I could get it to move but as you say, not quickly at all. All the people I talked to, including auto shops and serious truck guys said the truck is under powered and sadly there not much to do about that. One shop talked chips etc. but he mentioned that the extra on other components could be an issue. He told me if I was going to pull a trailer regularly to look into a trans cooler as well. Set the truck up properly and it will save your truck he said. One guy who owned one equated his pulling a travel trailer to it being like a brick pulling a cinder block down the highway. Analogy in my business is great.

 

Yep, I''d say it''s underpowered too. Jetchip works pretty well in general on other cars. They modify the fuel curve and advance timing a bit. You may need to run Premium fuel.


The Rodeo is good for small to medium sized boats and towing an occasional load, but it''s not good for heavier loads and uphill.

 

For around $100 you can have the computer remapped and gain some power there. Get air in and exhaust out, that will get you a bit more. I have the same thing when I tow my boat and I have all the above but not as bad as before.
