Default Dying Sunroof?

The sunroof mechanism on my beloved 2002 Rodeo LSE has started making a loud clicking sound just as the roof slides to a full close. My garage says that this means the whole sunroof will have to be replaced (at a cost of over a thousand bucks) and that I should "just stop using it".
Huh? I have heard that there are lots of problems with the Rodeo sunroof, though I didn't find any here. Can anyone offer a diagnosis/fix?
Thanks!

Sorry, I can only ride along with you and the same problem on a 2001 Rodeo LS, except my sunroof seems to be in the advanced stage and refuses to move at all. Though every once a while it will do the lift-open with a loud crack, and once it actually did slide back again after riding a real rough road but its stuck again. So please - any remedies out there without spending a thousand bucks ?

I think its better to take your car to the local mechanic and get it solved. He will not charge you lots of money.

I had a similar issue with my 01 LSE. Take a look at both insides from outside the care with the sunroof tilted up. There a a couple of clips with screws on them on both sides. One side of mine was off the track and I was able to get it back on. Worth a check out.

Default Ummm....what?

Thanks for your suggestion, Leto, but I'm still stumped.
I tilted open the sunroof, and then stood on the running board of the car to try to see what you mean...........but the panel only tilts up about 8 cm, so I can't see anything on the tracks. Can you maybe send me a photo? Thanks so much!

Goto an autoparts store or an rv store and buy a can of spray silicon lubricant and spray the tracks. It sounds like the factory grease that they coat on the tracks and guides is either dried up or gone. The clicking is from the motor working too hard. Try that. $8
