4WD engages when not selected

I have a '99 Rodeo, V6, 4WD. Last week the 4WD light began turning on by itself, especially noticeable when parked overnight but not exclusive to that. Sometimes it comes on and engages when driving. It usually turns off by itself after 30 - 45 min too. Sometimes less time than that. The button is not selected (pushed in) and pushing the button in & out repeatedly does nothing. The 4WD light only flashes, slowly at first then faster.
I don't think this is related, but the Check Engine light has been on for about 2 years. The code indicates it's an EGR issue, but my model doesn't have an EGR valve. I've had a couple shops check it out and they say there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. It's ran fine for that entire time, gas mileage is fine, timing is fine, it always starts perfectly regardless of temperature, and runs perfectly. Until now.
Suggestions?

Addendum: I had the Check Engine light issue fixed. That was an EGR flow restriction. The 4WD engaged light issue still continues. I have had this checked by two shops including the dealer and neither were able to track down the problem due to the problem going away when the engine warms up. The problem also goes away if the outside ambient air is warm enough. We've had a sudden warm up in Denver (80's) and now the problem is not occuring. This is the strangest thing! I know the problem will reoccur as soon as it's cool enough at night within the next few days and know that I am wearing on gears and/or bearings by driving on dry pavement in 4WD. I can feel the front wheels bind in turns at slow speed such as turning out of the driveway. If anyone has any ideas, I would GREATLY appreciate it. This is my only vehicle and I sure don't want to ruin the gears or drive system.
Thanks!
