Voltmeter needle goes to max (16V) sporadically
1996 3.2L Trooper. When driving, the brake and battery lights turn on and the voltmeter registers to 16 volts. Then it drops back to normal. This can happen off and on multiple times during a 2-3 mile drive. Battery has been checked, alternator was replaced not too long ago. Battery does not drain. Ran OBD-II and no errors are detected.
Could it just be that the voltmeter is broken and failing or the battery is going bad? Or something bigger and more expensive? I am afraid to drive too far and too long because it may become disabled on the road somewhere. Any ideas?
