No MAX a/c

New to this forum and thought someone out there might be able to help. I've got a 1991 trooper with the 2.8 V6. The only problem, besides it's anemic power,is that the a/c cuts out when switched to Max. Works fine on normal setting and blows icy cold. Any one have any thoughts on this??? Thanks
