V6 petrol 3.2. the cog has come off the 'new' starter motor & dropped inside, can I get access by unbolting the plate on the bottom of the fly wheel case ?

nope you have to pull the starter and fish for the lost part with a magnet but what cause the gear to fall off???????????

sounds more like you have a bent flex plate and your staarter motoris being eatten alive by the flex plate?
