Defrost/airflow dial sticking?

Defrost/airflow dial sticking?
I recently purchased a 1999 Amigo, and when trying to change the airflow selector from front air to defrost the other day, the **** was stuck and would not turn. I tried to turn it so hard that I snapped it off, but was able to glue it back onto the peg. Now, after wiggling it for a few minutes, most of the time it will turn, but it still gets stuck often.
It feels like the mechanism under the dash is having trouble opening/switching vents, as it's pretty noisy & clunky when I'm able to turn it. Sometimes it seems like it has an easier time opening while the truck is moving at a good speed, or when I have the blower on high. Once it turns, everything works fine, but winter is coming & I want to know that my defroster is reliable...is this an easy fix on these types of cars, or what might I be looking at here? Any help would be appreciated, I've searched a lot but found little info...
