Broken timing belt..no damage?
#1
Hey guys glad to be a part of this site. I just bought a 2000 Amigo that had broken its timing belt (2.2), which by my understanding is an interference engine. It appears that none of the valves were damaged as they are still seated and hold water in the runners. I can even see on the pistons and the valves where they hit. Is it possible that they just barely grazed the valves and didn''t do any damage? If so I think I may have gotten a crazy nice car for $500. Gotta wait for gaskets and timing belt to get here so I can put her back together. Thanks in advance.

any indication of contact "hitting" should serve as a notice that the engine is junk and needs to be replaced!
consider microscopic fractures, distortion of connecting rods and what happens @ high engine speeds in the middle of nowhere oron the freeway during rush hour!
I personally would not take the risk an a border line engine!
good luck!

if the valves are not bent then there isn''t likely any noteable damage to them..... i would still have the head checked though as there could be cracks etc. that you might not be able to detect with the naked eye.... however as kdfvwman posted there can/could be issues with the pistons and connecting rods now..... the best way to tell would be to hand crank the motor with the head off and look for any signs of the pistons not sliding "true" down the cylinders when the connecting rod is pulling the pistons back down.....

Thanks for the input guys. I took the head to a machine shop as it had two broken exhaust studs...and no I didn''t break them off I swear it. They checked it all out and said it was fine. The bottom seems to be fine as I can hand crank it easily and the pistons seem to be solid. The guys at the parts store say that an "interference" engine is a pretty loosely used term. Where I think of complete valve carnage it can just mean that the pistons graze the valves.
I have been waiting on gaskets forever. Does anyone know a place to get gaskets or parts in general for these engines? I had to turn to ebay to get them. Also am looking for a drivers side rear window and back window for the softtop if anyone knows a good place to find them...or may be interested in a hard top. Amazing I got this for $500.
