i just got a 99 trooper yesterday. and the steering wheel shimmy's from side to side the whole car shakes, not hard but it's there. the guy i got it from said the the mechanic said it was a bearing issue but with that wouldn't i hear metal on metal grinding? and he also said it could be a tie rod issue as well. my guess is since it's only from 10 mph to 40~50 mph then after i speed up it stops that it's an alignment problem maybe a faulty/curbed tire. what do you guys/gals think? thanks in advance.

 

ck tire balance, and for a bent wheel, it could be caused from tire cupping or due to lack of tire rotations

 

I just picked up a 99 trooper and also have the same problem....seems to be the worst at about 45-50 then once I get past 50 it stops.

 

I have a 99 too & noticed that a simple allignment & balance doesn't always work. Check your camber, this made a huge difference in vibrations.

 

i figured it out. i had the tires balanced and it helped but still didn't go away, so one night i noticed one of the tires was a little low so i went to the gas station and checked it and it was at 10 psi but i didn't look like 10 psi from looking at it. so i said hey if one is low maybe the others are too and they were they were between 5-10 psi but no way did they look it so i filled them up not thinking about the shaking i noticed the it was gone......sweet!......i'm still gonna get an alignment though......so moral of the story is check the air pressure. thanks to all who posted![img]smileys/smiley4.gif[/img]

getting the tires balanced and rotatedwill help but it is more than likely the tire itself. bad u-joints or an out of round drive shaft will also cause the effect. also check your struts/shocks for fluid leaks this can also cause that kind of problem
