Default trouble with a 93 v6

i recently bought a 1993 trooper with a 3.2 v6. upon purchasing i noticed that it was leaking oil around the valve cover, which i fixed by replacing the gasket. as soon as i got the engine back together it started skipping like it was missing on a cylinder. in the process of replacing the gasket, i snapped a stud holding the egr valve in place. could that broken stud cause skipping and severe loss of power? any help you could give would be appreciated.

fatwes - that egr is vacum operated, about 10 in Hg. you could be getting air leaking (actually sucking) in over the gasket where that broken bolt is not keeping things tight. Try getting that broken egr bolt off out, this would be best. If you can't get it out at least try to stop the leak. a good glob of form-a-gasket. rtv or similar might do it.

Trooper V6's are real phiniki (sp) about vacum leaks. make sure you got all of your vacum lines on right and there are no breaks in the lines.

Good Luck...

probably not a good idea. EGR seems to be an important loop in the ECM monitoring of emissions. I am testing both my EGR valve and control solinoid tomorrow and will probably wind up replacing both. Test procedure (for 2.8L anyway) is on page 4-5 Chiltons manual for troopers 81-96 . (8686) 36100 is the catalogue number of the pub or you can go online at Chiltons for an online manual (costs about $20 either way). I prefer having my own hardcopy for notes and availability.
