Hello- I am new to this website and I am hoping someone here has more knowledge on this topic than I do. Years ago I had a 1987 trooper with the 5 speed 4 cylinder, and that transmission was bulletproof. I had friends who had the similiar set-up with no complaints either.

However- I owned a 1999 and a 2000 trooper with the V6 and Auto tranny. Those transmissions were VERY weak. They were both rebuilt several times and you could feel the lose of power through the tranny. I had enough and got rid of them.

My question: I have the opportunity to buy a 1991 trooper with the V6 and 5 speed manual. Is the manual tranny from the 1991 the same one used in the 1987? What model number tranny is in the 1987 and 1991? How strong are those two trannies? Has anyone ever bolted the 5 speed manual tranny to a different engine and if so, what engine??
I have a pretty stout chevy 5.3 V8, that I would like to try and install in the 1991 trooper if i buy it.
