transmission

new owner of 89 trooper 4x4, auto trans.. previous owner says to drive, u must start out in low, shift to 2nd, then to drive. is this the proper proceedure? she got truck from her brother, who told her this.

no this is not normal procedure,unless u need to manually shift it for some odd reason.somthing wrong with the transmission,why it doesnt shift on it own.take a look 1st at the throttle linkage under the hood.there should be another small cable on the bottom of it.its proably miss adjusted,siezed,or broken.....this cable controls the upshift of that trans,if it doesnt move correctly with the throttle the trans doesnt know when to make the next shift.if you can manually shift it find an it doesnt give any other problem,that would be the first place to look.& nbsp; take to a dealer,or good trans shop.the cable is not very expensive.
