I have a 89 trooper 4 cyl fi on the way to work to day it started sounding loud and missing really bad and smoking some on the way home it was hard to start then started smoking REALLY bad it did'nt look like any water in the oil so I'm up for ideas

 

STill sounds like a blown head gasket to me. What color is the smoke? It could be a few other things but lets start with the easy one.

 

head gasket. the heads on the 2.6 have a thin spot between the coolant jacket and the exhaust ports. mine leaked into the exhaust and gummed up the o2 sensor which made it start to run rough and the backpressure in the cat made it hard to start.
