Hi, I am new to the Forum and new to the older Isuzu Troopers. I just bought a 91 Isuzu for $1000... its a nice rig and I want to make it nicer. It has 230,000 miles on it.... what can I do to keep this baby alive forever? She runs great and want to keep it that way. What kind of oil should I be using, and general maintenence tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

Wow... I'm new here (1st day) and seem to be handing out advise hand over fist!

Anyway, the 1st thing I'd do would be a good tune up. New spark plugs, plug wires, distributer cap & rotor, air & fuel filters, oil change (use synthetic oil, it's more expensive, but you'll be glad you did). You can go the whole 9 yards and do the transmission fluid and filter, and rear end fluid.

Also, check around the engine bay for any oil leaks. Sometimes the power steering pump will drip a little.

In other words, just give it a good once over.

Thank you... it is nice to finally have someone who responded to my question. I am just trying to decide if this one is worth keeping alive or if I should just find another 4X4. Does anyone have a Trooper with more than 250,000 miles on it? Are they worth fixing up or should I just find another with less miles? Thanks for your opinions.

Troopers are aptly named. The good thing is that parts are easy to find. If properly taken care of, they'll last forever. They're pretty good off-road too!

Unique thing about Troopers and Isuzu owners in general is there seems to be some extraordinary attachment that forms with their ride. It goes beyond strictly economics, and the people that keep them seem inordinately attached to them despite (or because of?)the problems that crop up with vehicles of age and ability.

I got mine at 120,000. I have had to put some $ into it and sweat as well, but can't seem to begrudge it! Definitely use synthetics in gear cases, be careful not to go to too low a engine oil viscousity....lifter clack happens, may happen anyway, no real harm but definitely annoying!

One owners opinion.

I can already see what you mean about developing a bond... I have been running all around in it for a couple days now and I love it! It is fun to drive and I am excited to take it up in the woods and mud tomorrow.

I will definitely use sythentic oil but what one should I use? The people before me had been putting in 20-50 ... is that the way to go for here in Oregon?

Thanks and let me know! Still looking for some people who have over 250,000 on their Trooper.

I use Mobil 1. It's tried and true. Royal Purple is an awesome oil, but you'd probably be wasting your $$ as it's made for high performance engines.

Look at it this way, if Mobil 1 is good enough to be the stock oil for Cadillacs and Corvettes, it's good enough for my Trooper!
