oil saturated brake shoes due to failed inner axle seal
Driver side had huge amount of gear oil all into the shoes. Failed VA state inspection, said the emergency brake was not stopping the Trooper.
Replaced oil seal with a rubber coated Duralast seal.
Cleaned up everything with a pressure washer and gasoline.
Assembled with cleaned shoes and emergency braking is still not great.
I bought some Carquest shoes from EBAY, no one had any locally.
Question is, how good is the emergency brake response on a Trooper? Since I never use it, I dont's have a feel for what it's like when working normally.
Should it be strong enough to lock the rear wheels?
And, the old seal looked ok. Could the Differential breather be clogged? Gear oil somehow went past the inner seal dripped down and into the brake area?
That entire area inside the drum was covered in an oily greasy brake dust.
Can gear oil work past the pressed on bearing retainer between axle shaft and seep past the bearing and into the brakes?
The inner seal rides on the bearing retainer, not the axle.
There is an outer axle seal, but you have to press the bearing off to change it, big job.
The diff was still full of oil, have not looked at it in several years.
