Default Lost 4WD

1996 Trooper Limited. 180,000 miles. Auto trans. Original owner. Pretty sure I've lost 4WD. Although there is normal resistance pushing lever into 4WD-High, the dash light does not come on, there isn't the additional resistance to getting moving when wheels are cut, vehicle fishtails in the snow, and an hour ago got stuck trying to get into my own garage! Had to shovel the snow away. What are the likely explanations for this? And what is the approximate cost of repair? Thanks.

Three separate problems: vacuum diaphram corroded [replaced]. Solenoid wiring from passenger compartment broken [rerouted]. One of two vacuum solenoids dead [replacing with pair, very expensive, $240 in parts alone]. Alas.
