burning lots of oil
i bought my wife a 99 isuzu trooper and i ran into a bit of a problem, in 1,000 miles if all or most on the highway it will burn about 2 qts of oil. i know there aren't any leaks because i put it on the lift at work and i looked around, it was clean. has anyone experienced this before? where should i start?
thanks,

i'm using conventional 5w30 but am going to switch to 10w30 and have heard of people switching to 15w40 but i am not quite sold on using that heavy of an oil. i am also going to try pulling the spark plugs and putting some top engine cleaner in each cylinder and letting it set over night, i've been told about a common problem with the 3.5 where the ring will build up carbon and allow heavy oil consumption, the top engine cleaner should clean out a lot of the carbon if that is the problem.

Problem iwth all 98-02
There is nothing you can do to stop this it is a problem with 1998-early 02.It is due to inadequate drain-back holes in the oil control rings. If you look on the internet you will find everyone that has a trooper in these years all have this problem. In late 2002 they did fix the problem but by then it was to late and they stopped making the trooper. There are acouple of things that will help. One is taking off the EGR valve and cleaning it and making sure the PVC valve is good and clean.

We used to have a lot of oil burning issues with the dealers that used Quacker state and Penzoil, the oil is good, it lubricates great, but on some engines it cokes in the rings, sticks them right up, and plugs the breathers - once they get resricted they start to syphon the oil right into the intake. The only product I ever had success with was one made by AC/Delco called X-66, (I think the X-88 is a penetrant, I mix them up) you can get it in arosol cans, it is now advertised as a throttle body cleaner, it used to be used to dissolve carbon on piston tops in Cadillacs and the AMC 258 six, they would rattle like they were ready to blow, warm it up pour this in and kill the engine with the last bit, let it set overnight and in the morning fire it up, large cloud of the worst smelling smoke - and the noise would be gone! It also cleans valves nicely, in used engines that have sat for a time, time and a half, the carbon grows and keeps the valves open, this stuff really helps! It may just open up the oil return holes and free stuck rings for you too! ;-)
