bought used 2002 trooper
Hi All,
I'm hoping I can find some good advice here.
I recently (as in, yesterday) bought a used 2002 Isuzu Trooper from someone on Craigslist. I test drove it, had my wife look at it and approve of it (it's for her) and everything seemed to look good. The Carfax report was good and clean, the appearance was clean, and it seemed like no problems. The folks that sold it to me seemed honest to tell me the problems they had with it and why they were selling it.
About 2 hours after I drove it home and let it sit in my driveway, I had to go somewhere and I wanted to drive it again, and that's when problems started.
When the Trooper was accelerating, it would jerk between 1st and 2nd gear. Likewise, when it was decelerating, it would jerk between 2nd and 1st gear. This wans't a normal shifting of gears, it was a large jerk, enough to know it wasn't right. After I got back in the car, the jerking never happened again...I figued it was because the engine was warm.
Today my wife experienced the same thing, and she said that at one point the "check transmission" light came on. So we immediately took it to the mechanic to do a diagnostics test on it.
He looked everything over and could not find a single thing wrong with it. He couldn't get it to jerk between gears, and he said the computer had no memory of the light ever coming on. He said that he checked everything he could think of, and no problems. Once again, after the engine was warmed from the first drive, the problems could'nt be duplicated.
Question is, has anyone experienced this? What could the problem be? What do I do? How do I fix a problem nobody can find?

After many test drives at the transmission place it turns out there was a pressure sensor/node that needed to be replaced. It costs just over $200 and was a relief to know it wasn't the transmission. Apparently this seems to be common with the type of transmission used in the '02 Trooper.
I think I'd start here if I were you!
