Default 99 tropper - slipping after oil change

Hi my daughter lives in ft. knox as they were just stationed there from colorado. I have done all my own work for decades and can not help them on this because this vehicle - I helped them buy before they left - was in pristine condition and all I did was go through it and change the suspension. My son-in-law just changed the oil and now he says it won't run in gear. says it starts fine but it is slipping as in a tranny type slip.
I said it has to be something he did as the car has run perfectly day in and day out since they left 4 mths ago. what could he have possibly done to make this happen? i'm thinking there has to a sensor or shift linkage connector he knocked off in that area. PLEASE HELP as they are on a strict military budget and can not afford the dealer and i'm 1100 miles away!
