98 Trooper - need shocks - rec?

98 trooper 42K miles
Called up my local auto shop - he told me middle of the road shocks are $105 , generic low end are $43 per shock.
The car is over 10 years old and I may drive it another 3-5, so is it ok to go with the cheap generics or should I go with the middle of the road shocks?
