95 Trooper Transmission Issue
I have a 1995 Trooper, 200k miles. Bought it about 4 years ago with 170k miles on it. Changed the trans filter and fluid about 3 years ago. The engine on it is still very strong, I change the oil every 2000 miles or so. Up until the recent past couple of months, this thing has been a tank. Currently the problem I am having that I have not been able to figure out for myself is with the transmission.
My trooper has an intermittent slippage. Sometimes I can go for days, even weeks without a slip. When it decides to slip it really does not have any telltale signs prior to it happening. Sometimes it slips when I start to accelerate, around 20-40mph, sometimes I have been going for a while and it gives out in the same mph range. When this happens, I let the engine idle back down, and shift it into 3 on the selector, and drive it for a minute or so there, then switch back to D on the selector, and it takes back off. In addition to this, I don''t seem to have a problem with this mph range if I am able to take off from a stop at a more consistent speed.
I have no indicator lights coming on (and I know they are functional from when my alternator went out, and caused all lights on my dashboard to go haywire).
Is there anyone out there that has had a similar experience with their troopers transmission; or an expert that could help me shine some diagnostic light on this so that I can fix it? I''m trying to avoid taking it into a ''professional'' mechanic to pay outlandish charges. I have been working on cars since I started driving them, and I''m inclined to tools... I just don''t have much experience in transmissions past flushing, and filters.
If I had to guess, which I hate doing in this situation, it might be a loose band, or a clogged filter (filter will be changed no matter what, because its due)... If it is something to do with band adjustment, I would prefer to do it at the same time, the transmission pan is a pain to drop on this thing with the cross bar directly under it.
Any input, or additional brainpower would be greatly appriciated.
