Default 94 trooper overheating issues.

I have a 94 with 150,000 on it and noticed it starred to get really close to the red. I did notice some slight antifreeze odor and some belt squeel prior to this happening. Could this possibly be the water pump? I did replace the thermostat but that wasn't it. There does seem to be a leak underneath I believe it's water. It's on the opposite side of the alternator to the right of the engine. Is this where the water pump is located?

Well i figured out where the water pump is. And I dont think its the pump that is leaking. I woke up this morning and my overflow was empty so I filled it up and now the vehicle runs and the heat meter stays at about halfway maybe slightly over half while I'm driving. But while I am stopped and let it sit at idle the gauge will go to about 80 percent full until I start driving again and it will go back down. Is this a water pump gone bad sign or something else. There also hasnt been any drips that I've seen all day.

check your water pump. also, check and see if the head gasket is possibly blown. (oil in antifreeze / vice versa)

I just bought a 94 rs and had the same problem, Heres all i did.
1. Replaced thermostat
2. Replaced water pump, the leak im suspecting your having is coming from a small hole in your pump that opens when your water pump goes bad, its the cars way of saying hey im sick.
3. If your going to do the water pump you will be taking off the the timing belt I highly recommend you change it then so you dont have to strip the engine back down in a few thousand miles.
4. On the fire wall on the left side down about 6 inches from the lip where the hood sits is a water hose with 2 sensors going into. Mine were highly corroded so i cut out the old wires and replaced them.

After all this Done in about 2 days my car never gets past 1/4 on the temp gage. Hope this helps, i did all this under 200 bucks myself.

if its only over heating at idle and there are know leaks i would think its a air flow problem.. i would check the fan clutch
