94 Trooper "Check Engine" Light
#1
I'm a little worried to say the least. I bought a '94 Trooper just 3 days ago, and a check engine light came on today!!
I had been driving for about 20 miles, and the check engine light came on.... BUT when I dropped below 40mph and came to a stop, the light went off. When I sped back up, the light came on again.
I was going to try to get the codes read, but every time I slowed down, the light went out, so how can they read the code if the light isn't on!!
Also, the advance auto parts in town can't read the codes on a '94 vehicle anyway.
Any ideas on what the problem could be? I can't find a chilton's repair manual for the vehicle anywhere, any alternatives that might be helpful?
On my last car we could read the codes manually using the blinking lights on the dash, can that be done with this vehicle?
Any help would be appreciated!
thanks,

Yes, you can read the codes from the light on the dash. The ALDL connector is where the carpet meets the console on the driver side. It has three terminals in it. There may abe a couple connectors there, so make sure you get the right one. You jumper the outside ones I am pretty sure either before or after turning on ignition (do not start) and the check light will start flashing. Code 12 is no codes stored signal. 32 is a common code for EGR which is what I think you will find. code numbers are stored even if the light is off. The memory keeps them until a number of ignition cycles are completed with no further problems, then they delete. Post if you get a different code or need more info. Good luck. Edited by: atfdmike
