94 Ticking (not the normal tick)
Well i have been fighting this problem for quite awhile any advice or ideaswould help. I got a 94 3.2 dohc w/ 220,000 on it, 1 owner. For the most part it has run strong since brand new.
The ticking started almost 50,000 miles ago and hasnt really got worse or better since. The ticking is really intermitent, but also extremely loud.most of the time the ticking starts when driving on the highway (over 3500rpms) for a prolonged period of time but can also happen if im trying toaccelerate fast and jump the rpms up around 5,000. The ticking follows the rps exactly.
The problem happens more in the summer(2-3 times per week) then in the winter (1-2 per month). sometimes the ticking just starts up for no reason. the only way it will stop is either to start and stop the engine repeatly and it will sometimes go aways(25% of the time), or to stop the car and let it sit for 1-2 hrs or overnight will always stop the noise. Its hard to say were the noise is coming from exactly but it seems to be on top and the front section of the engine (not really from the block itself).
I dont think it is valves, rods, or lifters since it is so intermitent. Also since i have been driving it so long w/ this noise i dont think it is anything major(i hope) like the timming belt. i have heard that the belt can slip a tooth and cause some noise but then why would it go completely away by leting it sit overnight, and you would think if teh timming belt was loose that it would have broke after 50,000 miles. the few times i tryed to have a shop check it out we were not able to get the engine to start ticking.
I was hoping to figure out what this is so i wont be a freaked out on long trips. any suggestions, advice, ideasEdited by: Swanzo
OK..
I too had this same problem w/ my 1994 Trooper(orig owner).
I had experienced ticking issues from time to time but 1.5 yr ago was different!
Very loud like never before...stopped by my neighboors house one nite & he was outside when i pulled up & thought it was done for!
You need to do something like this..i did this..except i only did it ONE time & only drove it ~ 500 miles &then did a regular oil change & the problem went away after a few hundred miles on the new "regular" oil change. I had ~ 220K miles on it when i did this & i have like 240k now!. Hope this helps...I was hesitent when i first read about this but it did work..I used the highest purity oil filter i could buy too.
Also..i have beenreligious about changing my oil ~ 3k miles since i bought this Trooper New in 1994.

do early oil changes for a while. Use good quality 0W30 or 5W30 oil and a new filter every change. Change the oil every 1000 miles a few times in a row to help clean the oil, add a detergent oil additive if you want. Once the <STRONG style="COLOR: black; : #ffff66">ticking[/b] goes away, change the oil again at every 3000 miles, unless the <STRONG style="COLOR: black; : #ffff66">ticking[/b] returns, at the first sign of <STRONG style="COLOR: black; : #ffff66">ticking[/b] change the oil. The <STRONG style="COLOR: black; : #ffff66">ticking[/b] goes away after the oil has a chance to really get it clean inside, sometimes 100 to 300 miles for me.
