I'm thinking of buying an 88 trooper from a local shop, it's not exactly pretty, but it's not bad. There are no rust holes or anything, it's just a little dirty and it doesnt have the back seat(big deal) problem is.. it starts, and seems to run fine, however, after it gets warmed up, it doesnt want to idle. It just shuts off, it'll start up right away, but still wont idle.. I'm wondering if it's just the carburator needs adjusted, or the timing, or what.. also if it's a hard fix:P any info would help, thanks!

Default 88 Trooper

Hey Evan. The 88 model trooper has a kind of single fuel injector and no real carburetor. I know because I have owned one for about 13 years. Back then, I gave 3500. for it with 135,000 miles. One of the best investments of my life. This drivetrain is good for a LONG time more, even after all the years. Mine now quits once it warms up. Now, I believe the trouble to be 2 possible things: The fuel relay module or ECM. If I get either of those 2 parts used, they are both cheap, the fuel relay module more so. I suppose I could get out my book and access the brain (ecm) loated between the front seats, under that console (thats what I should do)....using a certain page in that book, the brain will read out in red lcd umber codes, different things wrong. You then look up the numbers in the repair manual. Years ago, the relay module (by the fuses) did go bad, so I just plugged another one in there. Funny thing, even though my old fuel relay module was bad, the local auto parts store tester diagnostic said the part was still good. So you can't ALWAYS believe those reports. Here is a copy of a newer thread on my trooper: Hi everyone. Just replaced my timing belt and tensioner, water pump, front crank seal, freeze plugs, and power steering hose . It sat for months. Good news is now it doesn't leak any fluids and sounds very good, especially for about 250K miles. Bad thing is I have to hotwire my fuel pump to make it run. A few days ago, I was driving along, the engine "hiccuped". It happened a couple minutes later, this time killing the engine, with about 4 dash lights on. This happened several times more after I restarted the vehicle and over a 45 min. to 10 minute span progressively worsened until the 4 dash lights refused to turn back off and the fuel pump refused to supply fuel to the engine. To get home I directly hotwired the fuel pump, but the 4 dash lights remained on anyway. Before the fuel supply quit altogether, there was a brief period where I could warm up the engine a little after it sat a short time, off, but when the engine temp gauge reached that highest operating temp and the needle started back down, at that instant there was a click and the dash lighs came on/vehicle shut down. Let it sit, off for a few minutes and it would warm back up and the same thing would happen all over again. Finally it refused to keep running until I hotwired the pump, temporarily. It seems to me this happened several years ago and i had to hotwire it then hunt down a fuel relay (plug in type) Then the problem went away. I can't remember if that was EXACTLY the same as back then or not. Anybody had this happen to them before? Im kinda lost here. Any thoughts are well appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this. John Hemphill
