Default 4wd auto button

Hi. Thank you for taking the time to look at my post. I am having trouble with my 98 trooper with the 3.5L. It has push button 4wd. with a gear shifter for high and 2L. My problem is, the last time I put it in 4WD the button stopped working. On the dash it shows all four tires lit up in full 4WD not On Demand. the AUTO light is not on. it is definitely in the HIGH position. When I push the button nothing happens. I have not heard anything trying to actuate. Has anyone ever had this problem? (my luck is renowned for "I've never even heard of this happening before") I've searched all over for something to give me a clue. No fuses seem to be attached to it. relays? any ideas? very much appreciated! Thank you!

From what you describe it sorta sounds like you're in 4WD Low mode but the tcase didn't actually shift to Low range.
