My 2001 Rodeo LSE has this out of sync problem. The transmission gear shift will be in Drive but the dash gauge will show Neutral or Park or something other than Drive. I jiggle the stick shifter and the gauge will pop into the right gear. Problem is intermittent. Anyone heard of this or have a good hypothesis?

Most likely the range sensor is dirty. It can be removed and cleaned, replacements arent cheap.

Had the same problem on wife's 2001 Rodeo. Spent around 240 dollars to replace a switch that allowed the indicator on the dash to indicate what gear the trans. is in. That was in 2004 now the switch must have went out again, because same thing is happening! Dealership said the parts and labor has only one year warranty! So I am wondering how many of these switches will be eaten up in its life.

 

If you know your way around a tool box and have even a little mechanical ablility you can take the switch apart and clean it. Definatly much cheaper then buying a new one.

I just completed the switch cleaning that Gizmo42 posted instructions for. I did one thing differently. I didn't remove the switch from the vehicle. I removed the outside sheet metal shield from the switch, removed the shift linkage and torx screws holding the switch together. After opening the switch be careful not to bend the small metal fingers inside. If they are damaged you may have to replace the switch. Wipe out all old grease from the contacts. I used brake parts cleaner to remove the hard grease. After cleaning, apply new dielectric grease and reassemble. Mine has worked fine since then.

 

redneckrodeo said it doesn't affect the trans but after a time of driving it in this condition it will overheat the trans and cause a force motor code and and a/t temp overheat, and it will burn up the trans
