A friend of mine has a 99 rodeo that she knows nothing about.

I drive a Z71 tahoe myself, so my knowledge isn't much better.

A couple of weeks ago her car broke down about 30 minutes outside of town. I'm convinced its the alternator. (While she was driving her warning lights started coming on such as air bag, check engine, etc etc. Then the radio shut off and the lights started dimming, and finally the engine shut off.) Correct me if i'm wrong, but I am pretty sure those are symptoms of a messed up alternator.

My Questions:
1) Where can we pick up a new one for her car?
2) Is replacing the alternator a relatively simple job?
3) If so, can someone provide me with a write up?

Thanks.

Autozone normally stocks them, ~$150 IIRC.

Can be somewhat difficult, I found it easier to remove the alternator on my '98 by removing the right front tire, so that I could reach in to where the alternator is located.

Be wary of box store brand alternators. Isuzus are very picky about power and will do weird things. Most who have tried the generic ones end up replacing them again a few months later. The ones I have heard the most success with are Bosch reman and Napa.

I recently had to have my alternator replaced. The shop that I took it to was very honest.

They called me to tell me it was done but 5 minutes later called back to tell me it wasn't working again. I guess my 96 Rodeo needed a different kind of Alternator than the one they put in.

Fortunately they didn't charge me any more because they already had quoted mea price. My point is to make sure you have the right Alternator or you'll end up spending more time and money than you want to.
